The (Re)Natured Cities project has released its new Transnational Report “Green Views: Interviews and Local Assessment”, bringing together findings from Cyprus, Denmark, Ireland, Italy and Portugal.

The report explores how municipalities and local stakeholders manage Urban Green and Blue Spaces and identifies common challenges affecting the transition towards more sustainable, resilient and inclusive cities. Based on interviews, field visits and local assessments, the findings highlight recurring pressures related to limited resources and staff capacity, water management, biodiversity protection, fragmented responsibilities and the need for stronger public engagement.

Across the five countries, municipalities are increasingly adopting more ecological approaches, including reduced mowing, biodiversity-oriented planting, selective pruning and water-sensitive practices. However, the report also identifies persistent gaps between policy ambitions and the practical capacity to implement sustainable solutions. Financial and operational constraints, limited technical expertise, climate pressures and differing public expectations remain significant challenges.

The findings are now shaping the next phase of the project and the development of six practical technical resources focused on:

• Sustainable mowing and pruning practices
• Biodiversity-oriented planting and species selection
• Water-sensitive management
• Ecological habitat maintenance and nature-based practices
• Citizen engagement and environmental communication
• Adaptive governance and practical management

The key message is clear: sustainable urban green-space management needs to move from ambition to practical action. Municipalities need accessible tools, technical knowledge, stronger coordination and public support to turn sustainability goals into solutions that work in everyday practice.
